“To say that David is a fantastic guide really sells the experience short. Yes, we saw some of Scotland’s most beautiful scenery but we also learned so much along the way! History, geology, nature, folk tales, local lore and much much more. Combine this with a wonderfully positive attitude plus a caring spirit and you’ll understand why the only disappointing part of having David guide you is saying goodbye at the end. Thanks for an amazing experience David, we’ll be back!”  – Paul Clip

“We had the best guide you could ask for. He was incredibly knowledgeable about the area, giving context to everything we saw, and was great to chat with. The trail he chose for us was a perfect match for what we were looking for, just the right level of difficulty and stunning views. I would highly recommend Highland Guiding for anyone looking for a guided hiking experience!!” – Nicholas Cameron

“Highland Guiding led us on a spectacular trek in Cairngorms National Park. Best. Guide. Ever. We walked paths that were the perfect combination the of varied landscapes (mountains, waterfalls, glens, corries, etc). It was a totally reasonable level of strenuousness. We were properly prepared to experience the moody Highland weather but were blessed with dry yet dramatic conditions. The trip was made even more enjoyable by his knowledge of the ecosystems, geography, history, and even literary references of the area. I hope to return to Scotland and will certainly contact him for any of my outdoor adventure or photography needs.” – Michelle R

For people who want more than just a walk.

Our day hikes are ideal for:

Solo travellers
Exploring Scotland on your own is one of the best ways to experience it. A private guide means the day is entirely on your terms, with company and conversation if you want it, or peaceful miles if you don't.
Couples
A guided day in the mountains makes for an extraordinary day out. We can tailor the day to suit both of you, whether you're both experienced walkers or one of you is newer to the hills.
Small groups of friends
Up to 10 people, all moving together. Great for a group who share a love of the outdoors and want a memorable day with someone who knows the landscape well.
Older and returning walkers
The Scottish hills can be demanding, but they don't have to be. We know routes at every level and there's no pressure to push beyond what feels comfortable. The day moves at your pace.
Most of our day hikes suit people with a reasonable base level of fitness. You don't need to be an experienced hillwalker, but you should be comfortable walking for several hours with some ascent. We use a simple grading system to help match you to the right kind of day.

FAQs

We meet you at the trailhead — we don't provide minibus pickup or drop-off. Most of our clients have hire cars or their own vehicle. When you book we'll give you a specific meeting point with directions. If you're using public transport, let us know and we'll see what we can work with.
It depends on what kind of day you're after. We have routes suitable for people who are comfortable with a few hours of gentle walking, right up to full mountain days for experienced hillwalkers. Tell us your group's experience and fitness level when you enquire and we'll suggest the right kind of day.
Up to 10 per guide. If your group is larger, please get in touch, it may be possible to arrange additional guides.
Your own hill walking clothing and footwear, a packed lunch and plenty of water. We'll send you a full kit list when you book. Not sure what to wear? See our what to wear guide.
Half days are available but will be charged at the normal day rate.
We guide year-round. Spring and autumn often offer the best combination of light, colour and quieter hills. Summer brings long days and generally better weather. Winter guiding is conducted at low levels. We do not offer winter hillwalking or mountaineering requiring the use of crampons and ice axes.
Scotland's weather is famously unpredictable, and is very much part of the adventure. If it rains on the day of your hike, we generally expect to put on our waterproofs and go ahead as planned. If the weather dictates a change of plan, for example strong winds on high ground, an alternative route will be offered. In the event that conditions make it too risky to go out at all, you will be offered either a rescheduled date or a refund.
