Isle of Skye
The hikes below are suggestions to give you a sense of what's possible. Every private tour is fully customisable — we'll tailor the itinerary to your interests, fitness level, and dates.
On this self drive itinerary, you make your own way to the Isle of Skye on Day 1, and check in to your accommodation. Enjoy dinner at one of the excellent local restaurants, before getting a good night’s sleep before your first day of hiking tomorrow!
Your guide will contact you the day before to agree a hiking route for today, and a meeting point and time. A classic option is the circuit through the amazing rugged landscapes of the Quraing – a slow motion landslide where the hill is frozen in mid collapse. The amazing rock architecture, towering cliffs and rugged hills make for an otherworldly day of adventure.
After the hike you may like to explore more of the local area independently, or head to Portree for a look around town. Before finishing, your guide will agree plans with you for the next day.
Today you may explore the south of the island, hiking a circular route that visits a pair of abandoned villages on the coast. These villages – Boreraig and Suishnish – were brutally cleared of their residents during the Highland Clearances, and their remains are a haunting and poignant reminder of worse times amid what is now a wild and beautiful shoreline.
The walk is a longer, circular hike that takes in a mix of hillside and remote shoreline. Much quieter than northern Skye, you can expect to encounter few other people on this beautiful walk.
Once again your guide will confirm plans with you for tomorrow before finishing today.
For a slightly different island flavour, take a short ferry ride from Skye to the adjacent Isle of Raasay for your final day of hiking. Less visited than Skye but no less worthwhile, this amazing island boasts many fantastic hikes, fascinating history, and also a fantastic distillery!
You can board the ferry as foot passengers, and start hiking as soon as you land on Raasay. A number of excellent routes are available, including an excellent circuit around the old iron mines, which gives superb views back to Skye. If time allows, maybe pop into the excellent Raasay Distillery for a visit or even a tour.
After finishing the walk today your guide will make their farewells, and you can settle back in to your accommodation for your final night on Skye.
Check out from your accommodation this morning. Before you leave Skye you may like to check out one or more of Skye’s fantastic attractions, such as a visit to Dunvegan Castle or a tour of one of the local whisky distilleries. Later in the day say farewell to Skye as you begin your onward travel. Enjoy the spectacular drive back to the mainland and through the western Highlands.
All elements of the itinerary are subject to change due to weather conditions or other unforeseen circumstances.
Want to make this trip even more special? Here are some options to upgrade or extend your experience.
Instead of self drive, make this tour fully guided. Your guide will be your driver for the whole tour, collecting you from an agreed start location and returning there at the end of the trip. Adds two guided days to the tour, with options for more hiking on those days.
Take a tour of Skye's iconic Dunvegan castle - the ancient seat of the MacLeod clan. This is the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland, and has been the seat of the MacLeod's for over 800 years.
Use one of your hiking days to take a boat trip to the wild and remote Loch Coruisk, with the option of climbing Sgurr na Stri - a short but challenging rocky peak that offers one of the grandest views in Scotland.
Upgrade your accommodation to a stay at one of Skye's exclusive country house hotels. Various options available depending on availability, pricing on request.
Interested in any of these? Just mention it when you get in touch and we'll build it into your itinerary.
