What Our Guests Say

All our guides bring the same expertise, passion and local knowledge to every trip.

"

David Russell led us on a spectacular trek in Cairngorms National Park. Best. Guide. Ever. He chose paths that were the perfect combination of varied landscapes — mountains, waterfalls, glens, corries. It was a totally reasonable level of strenuousness. The trip was made even more enjoyable by his knowledge of the ecosystems, geography, history, and even literary references of the area. I hope to return to Scotland and will certainly contact Highland Guiding for any of my outdoor adventure or photography needs.

"

We spent a magical three days exploring the Isle of Skye. To say that the guide is fantastic really sells the experience short. Yes, we saw some of Scotland's most beautiful scenery but we also learned so much along the way — history, geology, nature, folk tales, local lore and much much more. Combine this with a wonderfully positive attitude and a caring spirit and you'll understand why the only disappointing part of having a Highland Guiding tour is saying goodbye at the end. We'll be back!

"

We so much enjoyed our first trip with David, we booked two more with him! On all three trips David was our planner and private guide. He showed us the beauty of Scotland - wonderful people, places, food and exceptional nature viewing. Our trips covered the Outer and Inner Hebrides and included walking and boat trips to view bird and sea life, hiking, driving adventures, and history and culture experiences all accompanied on the road by his excellent Scottish music play lists. David collaborated with us during pre-trip planning as well as during our trips, extensively researching the culture and history of each day’s destinations as well as honing his expertise of the flora, fauna, and waterways. Traveling in July, we had fantastic weather! Many puffin, eagle, gannet, skua, seals, and red deer are among the species we have been fortunate to see on our trips besides the beautiful and diverse geography. The added bonus - David is a professional photographer. During and also after the trip he emailed us the most beautiful photos of our travels. Unparalleled photos of wildlife and scenery! A tremendous gift and memories of perfect travel with David, our wonderful #1 guide, travel partner, and good friend. Many thanks! We will be back with David on Trip #4 someday soon!

FAQs

Explorer Tours are ready-made 5-day itineraries — ideal if one of our existing destinations matches what you're looking for. A bespoke trip makes sense if you want a longer trip, a different destination, a specific focus, a combination of areas, or simply want every detail designed around your group rather than following a set template.

If you're not sure which is right for you, visit our private tours page for a simple guide.

Active adventure is at the heart of everything we do. That said, we're delighted to weave in other experiences alongside the hiking — visits to historic sites, private boat charters, whisky distillery tours, wildlife encounters, foodie experiences and more.

If you're looking for a bespoke trip that's primarily cultural or experiential rather than active, our sister company Celtic Escape specialises in exactly that.

Our bespoke trips are fully guided and driven by your guide throughout — that's a core part of the experience. If you'd prefer to drive yourself between locations, our Explorer Tours may be a better fit. These are ready-made 5-day self-drive itineraries with private guided days included.

If you have a specific location in mind that isn't covered by our existing Explorer Tours, get in touch — we may be able to design something similar for you.

We operate across the Scottish Highlands and Islands, with a particular emphasis on the areas we know best — the Cairngorms, Skye, Torridon, Glencoe, Glen Affric, the Great Glen, and the Outer and Inner Hebrides. On a bespoke trip we can take you practically anywhere in Scotland.

Most trips begin and end at one of Scotland's major cities — Edinburgh, Glasgow or Inverness.

No — your trip with Highland Guiding begins from your arrival point in Scotland. You'll need to arrange your own flights to and from Scotland. If you're flying in, your guide can meet you on arrival or your first night's accommodation will be arranged close to your arrival airport.

The most popular time to visit is late April through September, when the weather is warmest and the days are longest. That said, Scotland has something special to offer in every season — autumn brings spectacular colours and quieter trails, and winter offers dramatic light, snow-capped peaks and a very different kind of adventure.

Tell us when you're free and we'll tell you what's special about Scotland at that time of year.
