Scotland awaits you on this bespoke hiking adventure through the Highlands and Islands. Spend 3 nights in the Highland capital of Inverness and 3 nights on the fabled Isle of Skye. Discover the beauty and variety of Scotland’s ancient landscapes, exploring some of the finest hiking areas in the company of a local expert guide.

Itinerary

Day 1: May 10th

Arrive in Edinburgh

Susan and Michael: Arrive in Edinburgh today and check in to your accommodation near the heart of the city. Depending on timings you may wish to explore the city some today before settling in for a good night’s rest before your Highlands adventure begins in the morning.

Day 2: May 11th

Guided Tour of Edinburgh

Susan and Michael: This morning you will be met at your hotel by Alan Wright, your city guide for the day. Alan holds the highly esteemed ‘Blue Badge’ award and is a highly qualified expert on the city and its history. You’ll spend the day together on a walking tour, taking in the Odl Town, Royal Mile and surrounding city centre highlights.

Amy and Ted: Arrive in Edinburgh today and settle in to your accommodation at the Bruntsfield.

Day 3: May 12th

Self Guided in Edinburgh

Today will be a free day to explore Edinburgh some more. Perhaps explore the National Museum of Scotland, or spend the day enjoying some of Edinburgh’s many fine art galleries.

Day 4: May 13th

Hiking in Cairngorms National Park

This morning your guide David will collect you at your accommodation, and together you will transfer north to the Highlands, stopping for breaks along the way when desired.

Reaching the town of Aviemore, your guide will take you for your first hike amid the stunning ancient Caledonian Pine Forests of Rothiemurchus. Your guide will tell you all about Scotland’s largest national park and the efforts being made here to protect and restore Scotland’s ancient forests.

After your hike, continue on to Inverness to settle in to your accommodation for the next 3 nights overlooking the river.

Day 5: May 14th

Hiking in Torridon

Head north today from Inverness to visit the sparsely populated region of Wester Ross – an area of many dramatic mountains and few people! Enjoy a hike amid the stunning scenery of Glen Torridon, with hike options ranging from easy walks at glen level to more challenging ascents of some of Scotland’s most famous peaks.

Day 6: May 15th

The Great Glen

Head to Glen Affric today, to hike in the glen that many people reckon to be Scotland’s finest – Glen Affric. Famous for the beauty of its hills, pine woods and lochs, Glen Affric offers a range of walk options from lochside circuits, easy strolls and challenging hills.

Day 7: May 16th

Transfer to Skye

Depart Inverness this morning and head west for the Isle of Skye. Along the way you’ll pass Loch Ness, and later the famous Eilean Donan Castle – both fine spots to stop for a photo.

Reaching Skye, your guide will take you for an afternoon hike in Glen Sligachan before continuing on to your accommodation for the next 3 nights.

Day 8: May 17th

The Trotternish Peninsula

Today you can explore some of the most iconic landscapes on the Isle of Skye, and enjoy a hike at the incredible Quiraing or Old Man of Storr. The extraordinary rocky landforms of this part of Skye are quite otherworldly and sure to be a highlight. An early start is recommended to get on the trail before it becomes crowded.

Day 9: May 18th

Loch Coruisk

Having explored the middle and north of Skye, today you can head to the south of the island for a memorable adventure to the ‘dark heart’ of the Black Cuillin Hills at Loch Coruisk. A 45 minute boat trip from the fishing village of Elgol takes us to a remote anchorage where seals can be found reclining on the rocks. Here we have the option to go ashore for up to 4 hours to explore the loch hidden amid the most impressive mountains in Scotland.

Day 10: May 19th

Return to Edinburgh

Depart Skye today, taking the ferry from Armadale to the fishing village of Mallaig in the western Highlands. The drive from here back to Edinburgh is one of Scotland’s most scenic, and you’ll be able to enjoy a final hike with your guide in gorgeous Glen Nevis. Continue on to Edinburgh afterwards, where your guide will return you to your hotel and make their farewells.

Drive times: Skye to Edinburgh approx 6 hrs total including Armadale – Mallaig ferry.

Day 11: May 20th

Departure

After a good night’s sleep, check out of your accommodation this morning and begin your onward travel homewards.
