Clothing - upper body

Section 02

Layers let you adjust as the weather changes, and in Scotland it often will.

Essential
  • Base layer, merino wool or synthetic, never cotton
  • Warm mid layer, such as a fleece
  • Waterproof jacket, breathable, with a hood
Optional
  • Insulated jacket for cold or windy days
  • Sun hat

Clothing - lower body

Section 03

Keeping your legs dry and comfortable matters just as much as your top half.

Essential
  • Hiking trousers, quick-drying and stretchy
  • Waterproof over-trousers, leg zips make these easier to pull on
  • Non-cotton underwear
Optional
  • Gaiters

Footwear

Section 04

Scotland's ground is rough and often wet, so good footwear is well worth the investment.

Essential
  • Waterproof hiking boots, well-fitted with good grip
  • Hiking socks, wool or synthetic blend
Optional
  • Hiking shoes, fine for easier, drier trails
  • A spare pair of socks

Pack & equipment

Section 05

A few well-chosen items keep you comfortable and ready for whatever the day brings.

Essential
  • Rucksack, 15 to 25 litres, with a rain cover
  • Water bottle or hydration bladder
  • Any personal medication
Optional
  • Phone or camera, a protective case is wise
  • Insect repellent, well worth it in summer
  • Walking poles
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Flask for a hot drink

On the hill

On a guided trip your Mountain Leader carries the safety kit, including a first aid kit, map and compass, and an emergency shelter, so you can simply focus on enjoying the walk.

If you head out independently, you will need to carry these items yourself and know how to use them.
