Our inaugural photo of the season comes from Glen Tarff – a stunning glen near Fort Augustus in the Great Glen that is also a stone’s throw from Loch Ness. Glen Tarff is notable for the superb oak woods that line its steep flanks – a rarity in this area – which make it a truly stunning location for an easy stroll or more challenging hike up into the surrounding hills. The glen also features a truly gorgeous waterfall at Culachy Falls (below).
This image was taken relatively early in the short November day, just as the sun cleared the hills. Morning mist was just starting to lift, providing a sight of the hills beyond, while creating some dazzling displays of light amid the oak trees. This dead standing oak stood out beautifully against the background. Using a Fuji X100T with a fixed 23mm lens, it was necessary to shoot vertically and stitch a panorama of 4 images to get the full view.
We love this image as it’s a great example of how magical Scotland can look at every time of year. November has a bit of a reputation for being cold, wet and dull. So this just goes to show that you should never make assumptions about nature’s ability to take your breath away.
