Our photo of the season welcomes spring back to the Highlands and Islands. Beginning in April the brown of the landscape begins to give way again to fresh greens, and of course the fields and rough grazings of the Highlands are adorned with many a bouncing lamb.
This photo was snapped on the Isle of Skye, on one of our favourite Skye hikes. Overlooking Loch Slapin, with the serrated edge of Bla Bheinn looming in the distance, the path leads to the remains of the ancient township of Suisnish. Along with the neighbouring coastal village of Boreraig, Suisnish was brutally cleared of its residents as part of the Highland Clearances in 1853. The walk around the coastline of this part of Skye is therefore a poignant mix of wild beauty but tragic history. It’s also one of the best hikes on the island for escaping the crowds and is far, far quieter than the busy locations such as the Quiraing and Old Man of Storr.
