Photo of the Season – Summer 2026

View of Gylen Castle, Isle of Kerrera

Our Summer photo has been chosen to celebrate everything we love about Scotland’s west coast in the height of summer. Rugged coasts, quiet beaches, lush green hills, and of course a dramatic castle ruin. This is Gylen Castle on the small island of Kerrera, which lies just off the mainland near Oban.

Kerrera is one of our favourite locations in the Highlands to spend a day hiking. The walking is mostly straightforward on decent trails, and with endlessly changing views and fascinating history to explore, it’s a fantastic choice for a sunny west coast day. The castle is a real highlight, and a great place to delve into some of the turbulent history of the rival clans who strove for control of this area of Scotland. Built by the MacDougals in 1582, Castle Gylen was ruined less than a century later in 1647 by Covenanter forces during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms.

Kerrera has a huge amount to explore, from fascinating history to geology, wildlife and local flora. Hiking with an expert local guide is by far the best way to discover the threads that tie these subjects together. Join us for a hike on Kerrera as part of a bespoke adventure or our as part of our 3 Glens Explorer Tour.
